The healthiest takeaway sandwich option
A takeaway tuna salad sandwich has the same amount of fat as three McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, a study has found.
The Australian Nutrition Foundation study researched the total and saturated fat and sodium percentage of 170 sandwiches from 30 randomly chosen takeaway food outlets in Melbourne.
The turkey and mustard sandwich came in at the healthiest in fat, with six grams of total fat, two grams of saturated fat and 1407 milligrams of sodium.
The study found the roast beef and mustard sandwich was the lowest in sodium with 993 milligrams, and 12 grams of total fat and four grams of saturated fat.
The vegetarian sandwich scored the highest fat-wise, with 40 grams of total fat and 14 grams of saturated fat, and 1276 milligrams of sodium.
The chief nutritionist, Jane Smith, said many shops are giving a dinner’s worth of fat and calories in a sandwich.
“In a tuna salad sandwich, it is drowning in about one third a cup of mayonnaise,” Ms Smith said.
The foundation’s recommended daily adult limit is 65 grams total fat, 20 grams saturated fat, and 2400 milligrams of sodium.
